From the Pastor´s Desk July 2009

Dr. Jerry Rankin, in his book Spiritual Warfare (B&H Publishing), told about Andy Dietz who has coordinated mission trips overseas for many years. After one project the team returned home but Andy stayed in Europe to visit friends. When he went to find a place to eat dinner he found himself in the wrong part of town. He was mugged, robbed and kidnapped. His captors sent a wire to his family asking for $5000 to set him free. His family contacted the authorities, but before they could act Andy eluded his captors as they were eating and drinking.
When asked if he would go on any more mission trips Andy replied that he would, but that he would have to be more vigilant. He told what it was like to be beaten, tied up, put into the trunk of a car, and his life threatened. He said, “They didn’t know me. Nobody knew where I was. I meant nothing to them. My life was worthless. I realized they wouldn’t think twice about getting rid of me, and no one would know. You can imagine how desperate I was to get away. And all I could think of was God saying, ‘Andy, this is how desperate you should be to know me.’” (Used by Permission)
Are we desperate to know God?  Is ‘knowing God’ the passion of your life? As I read Andy’s story, two verses came to mind. The first is the figure of a deer longing for water in the midst of a drought: “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God.” Psalm 42:1
The verse other is the promise from Jesus that if we are desperate to know God that He will provide what we desire: “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” Matthew 5:6.

Desperate to know God more and more, Bro. Keith
