From the Pastor’s DeskIf My people who are called by My name humble themselves, pray and seek My face, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 HCSB

What does revival look like?  How will we know if we have revival at Lynn Lane Baptist Church?  Do we really want revival? Do I really want to see revival in my life?  What am I willing to do to see revival in my life?  What am I willing to give up? These are questions that I have wrestled with over the last several months.

What is revival?  By its definition, it means to revive, to make alive again.  For too long, the Church of America has been dead.  Why is it dead?  How long has it been dead?

General William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, wrote:

“The size of a denomination is not an indication of its reality or spiritual power. Further, a local church may go through the correct motions and express biblical beliefs, yet lack the presence of the Holy Spirit. No amount of orthodoxy can guarantee that God is in or with the congregation, if it lacks a sense of dependence upon Him for all its needs. It can only become another church like that in Laodicea. Such religion is without the Holy Spirit.” (emphasis mine)

The essence of what General Booth is saying is that too often we try to do what we do as a church without dependence upon the Lord Jesus Christ.  That sometimes happens when we see the Lord at work elsewhere, and we try to adapt their methods, without actually doing the hard work of surrender, prayer, seeking God’s face and His plan.

It is so easy to plan, and to carry out programs without the power the Holy Spirit.  But if we really want to see God at work in our midst; if we really want to see revival, we need to humble ourselves before God, seek Him, repent of our sin and allow Him control of our lives.

Jesus said that we must humble ourselves and surrender ourselves each day.  What does that mean?  ‘Humble’ means to bow before; to recognize a greater authority.  It means to submit our will, our life, and our all to the Lord Jesus Christ.  It means to be willing to follow Him, no matter the cost.  It means to die to our own desires and to surrender to His desires and His plans. To be filled with the Spirit of God, to be led by the Spirit, we have to repent of sin and of all that we desire and allow Him to take preeminence in our lives.  This is what God requires before He moves in our midst.  Will you surrender your all to Christ and seek Him first? Will you pray with me that God will do a mighty work in our midst so we can see revival?  God promises that He will act if we humble ourselves and pray and seek His face.

I’m ready for revival. How about you?  Pastor Keith
