From the Pastorīs Desk - December 2009

“Do not be afraid.  Behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord... And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” Luke 2:10-14

Can’t you just imagine the scene? The shepherds were out in the fields watching their sheep. It is pitch dark except for the stars overhead and the few small campfires. Maybe some of the shepherds were busy warming themselves as they talked to one another. Some may have been musicians like David and were singing or softly playing their lyre to calm the sheep. It probably seem to be a night just like every other night....until the angel suddenly appeared to them... and they saw the glory of God all around them. No wonder they were afraid. Then the angelic announcement....a Savior has been born who is Christ the Lord. And they went to find Jesus.

What has always amazed me is the response of the shepherds to this news.  They went from fear to wonder.  And they left their flocks – their livelihood – in the fields because nothing was more important than seeking Christ. Do we live as if nothing is more important than seeking the Lord?

After the shepherds had seen the baby Jesus they returned to their flocks glorifying and praising God.  That should be our response to seeing the Lord.... a desire to bring Him glory.  We give God glory and honor by our faithfulness to His Word. We glorify Him by our actions and our attitudes.

As we prepare for Christmas let us remember the shepherds.  May we too be filled with wonder as we humble ourselves before the Lord.  May He be glorified in us.  God bless each of you.  Keith
